First considered to take place in summer 2010 it is now announced for the next years hot season. So get your holidays 2011 planned right in time – for there might be more netaudio festivals next year: London, Lisbon and … we’re not saying more at the moment..!

Sad news for Dubosmium and Netaudio Berlin . Abdellah aka Dubosmium, invited to play in Berlin for the Netaudio Festival Berlin  (plus some appearances on an extended tour in France), has had his VISA refused by German Embassy in Rabat, Morocco -  and for this reason won?t be able to play. We’re all very sad about this news – for we really tried hard to convince the Embassy of the outstanding character of Dubosmiums role in in african/arabian netaudio movement. We also were pointing at the involvement of the Hauptstadtkulturfonds to make this festival happen – as well as the correlation between the Netaudio Festival 2009 and the 20th anniversary of the teardown of the Wall.

Disregarding all our arguments German Embassy was not even upright enough to tell a reason for their decision.  We think it’s a shame how poor those German representatives in Morocco behave. It clearly shows that there is no spirit of overcoming existing borders between cultures and nations guiding this institution. Besides this arrogant and ignorant behaviour it should also be mentioned, that all other German Embassies were co-operative and supporting Netaudio Berlin Festival with permitting all bands and musicians to play in Germany (although VJs were not regarded as artists in the German Embassy in the Ukraine). This might also demonstrate the lone and shameful politics of German Embassy in Morocco.

Roots Ista Posse [Fresh Poulp Records / Jahtari] from Paris will replace Dubosmium on the Experimental Floor @ Club Maria Berlin on Thursday – though he would perfectly fit on the 8bit/Dub Floor on Saturday… Anyhow: a little dubby 8bit-tunes on the experimental floor can’t be wrong also…

Breitband selbst versteht sich als Navigator durch die Welt der digitalen Kultur. Jede Woche setzt sich die Sendung kritisch mit aktuellen Entwicklungen in neuen und alten Medien auseinander. Themen sind immer wieder Brennpunkte zwischen Internet, Politik, Journalismus und Musik. In der Rubrik “Netzmusik” berichtet Breitband wöchentlich über Netlabels und Netzmusiker.

Bereits bei dem von Netaudio Berlin leidenschaftlich unterstützen Branchenmeeting ?Alltogethernow? (a2n) besuchte uns die Journalistin und Moderatorin Christine Watty während unserer Diskussionsrunde zu ?Netlabels als wesentlicher Baustein der Independent- Musikkultur?, führte Interviews mit dem cc-Experten und Netaudioaktivisten wie Volker Tripp (iD.EOLOGY) sowie dem Netaudio-Künstler und Blogger Ronny Kraak vom Kraftfuttermischwerk.

Christine Watty: “Breitband ist eine Sendung in Deutschlandradio Kultur. Genauer: Das Magazin für Medien und digitale Kultur und läuft jeden Samstag von 14:05 Uhr bis 15 Uhr. Darin gibt es unter anderem auch die Rubrik “Netzmusik’, in der wir Musik vorstellen, die zum freien Download im Internet zur Verfügung steht. Dazu schauen wir auf Portale wie myspace, c-tube und ähnliche, auf Musik-Blogs, die Releases von Netlabels präsentieren, surfen durch die ganze Musikwelt im Internet – und picken das heraus, was wir interessant und beachtenswert finden, ohne Genre-Begrenzung. Wir verlinken auf der Seite www.breitband-online.de die jeweiligen Homepages, so dass auch unsere Hörer nach der Sendung zur Musik finden. Jede Ausgabe von Breitband, inklusive der Musik-Besprechungen, steht auf unserer Seite zum Nachhören als Podcast bereit. Musik-Vorschläge für Breitband übrigens gerne jederzeit an mich!?

As this year?s festival theme is “East meets West” and it occurs just before the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall we initiated the “Berlin Wall of Sound” Project – a sound map of field recordings of the route of the former Berlin Wall. Jon Dickens aka J-Lab started thinking about his project when he came to Berlin in winter 2008/2009 – he began thinking about how netaudio and creative commons are breaking down barriers and walls in the music industry.

During these days Jon was living in the Lohmüle trailer-park, which sits on the former death strip (like the Maria), the no man?s land between the two walls. Thinking about all the different commemorations of the Wall, the chunks that are left remaining, the way the route has been marked through the city, and now the Mauerweg path that follows the Wall all the way round he realized: no one?s done a sound map of it so far. In an interview with Musik Line J-Lab talks about the idea of the project: “The thing about it is to capture the essence of what has been left behind. Has that scar disappeared? Where is that scar? Because in some places of the city you’d never know the Wall was ever there. Then in other places, on the edge of the city for instance where the Brandenburg and Berlin boundary is, there’s a huge scar in the forest 150 metres wide.”

The team of TRIoon will present the field recordings as an audio-visual live jam session using cut-up, spliced, looped, and sequenced sounds as well as pictures and film material taken along the route of the former berlin wall. TRIoon is an international collaboration between producer and musicians Dr.Nojoke (Germany) and J-Lab (UK) and Spanish musician and visual artist Servando Barreiro operating mainly in the Netaudio and Open Source community. J-Lab explains the idea of the performance: “The great thing about digital music technology is the fact that you can take field recordings, samples and stuff, and completely destroy their original reference and context, move things. It’s like painting an impression in sound of what is now at the Wall, where the Wall stood. [...] I’ve put some musical motifs in and really all I do is select a sound which I think is apposite – just playing some field recordings, you get an emotional response to what you’re hearing, colouring it, putting the recording in a kind of frame.”

radio aporee is responsible for programming and hosting of the Berlin Wall of Sound project. When J-Lab got in touch with Udo, he was really keen, keener than some of the other people he spoke to. aporee is an open project for the creation and exploration of public soundscapes and an open channel for the work and experiments of sound artists and musicians. It collects and organizes sound recordings from daily surroundings and environments all over the world. The sounds are organized within a mashup system of mapping software, databases, telephone networks and the Internet. The project reflects on actual changes and developments in mobile computing and so called locative media, which we assume to be crucial to the way we experience our near future daily life.

The field recordings will be presented on a multitouch-wall from Tentable. The device features a touch-sensitive screen measuring 180 cm diagonally. Through its interactive and intuitive concept, the Tentable opens up a virtually unlimited field of possibilities of presentating and communicating information. It has been used for painting graffiti with fingers and hands or playing flipper on various events this year, such as the Berliner Kunstsalon, the Urban Affairs Exhibition and the Long Nights of Museums and Sciences. For the Netaudio Festival the Tentable will be adapted to present an interactive map of the field recordings in which users can zoom in and out, move along the route of the wall and listen to the recordings.

The Berlin Wall of Sound is an ongoing project and will be continued after the Netaudio Festival, so if you are in Berlin in the next weeks and months, take your field recorder and explore the sites of the former berlin wall. Everybody is invited to contribute! By participating you are creating a timeless document of contemporary and historic value ? matching perfectly the spirit and sense of this year?s Netaudio Berlin Festival. ?We would like this to be Netaudio Berlin?s gift to the people of Berlin, without whom the festival would not be possible.?

We haven’t quite grown up completely yet, that?s no secret. We like nothing more than to waste our extremely valid time on inventing strange games to waste even more time! As I’m sure you understand from your own lives? If you are one of the illustrious few who take pleasure in useless inventions of  an unserious time killing nature? Then congrats!! Netaudio Ping Pong is table tennis for music nerds ? or for those who always wanted to be one? The game is set around a ping pong table equipped with 2 sets of electronic drum pads. When the performance starts, each player has a turn to improvise music on the pads for 4 bars. The players aim is to contribute towards a seamless musical mix. You have no idea of what we?re talking about? Then simply watch this small video, have a look at this flickr-slideshow ? or find a introduction as pdf file here.

Anyhow: We?ve played this game 716 times already and we are a bit fucking bored of  all the sounds, which have even started making their way in to our dreams. So we?re urgently looking for some new sets of sounds to incorporate in to the game.

Netaudio Berlin bietet im Rahmen der “Alltogethernow” – a2n eine Diskussionsveranstaltung zum Thema “Netlables als wesentlicher Bausteine der Independent Musikszene” an. Denn nachdem in den 1990er Jahren die Independent Musikverlage und ?label mehr und mehr von den Verlagsriesen der Branche arborbiert und bestenfalls als Sublabel überleben konnten, breiten sich seitdem eine wachsende Zahl an Netlabels in dem Vakuum aus. Individuell geführt und eher an neuen, ungewöhnlichen Sounds als am bestehenden Massengeschmack des Mainstreams orientiert bieten Netlabel einerseits all jenes, was die Independent Vinyl- oder CD Label d er 1980er und 199er attraktiv gemacht hat. Indem Netlabel derzeit i.d.R. nicht auf finanziellen Gewinn ausgerichtet sind, bieten sie andererseits extrem wenig Argumente für ihre Absorption durch die großen Majors. Im Schlepptau der non-kommerziellen Label entwickeln sich zudem in jüngster Zeit auch neue Formen und Strukturen, die den kostenfreien Rahmen verlassen und alternative Bezahlmodelle ? von Mikropayment über hybrides Cross-Selling, temporäre Kostenpflicht bis hin zu Zahlungen auf freiwilliger Basis anwenden. Welche Potenziale bieten Netlabel für eine zukünftige Independent-Labellandschaft jenseits von Selbstausbeutung und diesseits von Integrationsinteressen der Major Companies? Welche Strukturen entwickeln sich ? oder haben sich bis dato noch nicht entwickelt, wären aber wünschenswert ? oder gar notwendig für eine vielfältige und chancenreiche Indie-Musikkultur?
